Along the way, you’ll see tea workers—often called “tea ladies”—plucking leaves by hand, just as it has been done for generations. You’ll even have the chance to join them for a short while and try your hand at tea plucking. This trail is away from the tourist crowds, so you’ll be surrounded mostly by locals and the peaceful beauty of the countryside. We’ll take a break for a scenic picnic right in the middle of the tea fields—a perfect spot to relax and take in the views. Once the trek is complete, we hop into a tuk-tuk for a short ride to Monisha Villa Home Stay, where a special experience awaits. Here, we’ll join Fathima and her family for a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class. Fathima is well-known for her cooking, with many happy guests sharing their experience on TripAdvisor under the Sri Lanka Trekking Club. You’ll take part in every step—chopping, grinding spices, cooking over fire—guided by Fathima’s expert hand. Once everything is ready, we sit down together and enjoy a delicious dinner that you helped prepare. We stay overnight at Monisha Villa, feeling full and fulfilled after a truly authentic Sri Lankan Day.
Day 4: Trekking to Ella Rock via Village, Forest & Ravana Cave (Pekoe Trail Stage 15)
After enjoying a traditional local breakfast at Monisha Villa, we take a short tuk-tuk ride to the starting point of today’s trek—Stage 15 of the Pekoe Trail. Ella is a charming town nestled in Sri Lanka’s hill country, known for its breathtaking scenery and lush green valleys. One of the highlights of any visit to Ella is climbing the famous Ella Rock—and today, you’ll do it in a truly unique way. Instead of following the usual tourist route, we take a more scenic and off-the-beaten-path trail. Our route winds through peaceful forest paths, quiet villages, and vegetable farms, giving you a more authentic and immersive experience of local life and nature. The full trek is around 8 km and takes about 4 hours, including the climb up Ella Rock, which rises to around 2,000 meters above sea level. From the summit, you’ll enjoy spectacular panoramic views across the valley—a perfect place to relax and take it all in. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch at the top, where you can enjoy your meal with one of the most beautiful views in Sri Lanka. After a good rest, we begin our descent—taking a different route that passes through the legendary Ravana Cave and Temple. From the temple, we walk a short distance to reach the Ella town center. This marks the end of our 4-day trekking adventure. From here, you’re free to head to your hotel, guesthouse, or homestay that you’ve arranged for your stay in Ella.

“Discover Sri Lanka’s Scenic Heart: Trek the Pekoe Trail from Kandy to Ella Through Tea Plantations, Forests & Mountains (Stages 1–15)”
Stage 1-2-3- and-11-12-13-14-15

Duration: 7 Days / 6 Night

Day 1 – Pekoe Trail Stage 1: Hanthana to Galaha
After a morning pick-up from your hotel in Kandy, you’ll drive to Hanthana to begin your trek along Stage 1 of the Pekoe Trail. This scenic trail climbs through the central tea plantations of Hanthana, a mountain range with seven prominent peaks offering spectacular panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see Victoria Reservoir and the Knuckles Mountain Range stretching out in the distance. The trail then descends gently through a dense pine forest and crosses a river just before reaching Galaha. This region also served as a filming location for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, with scenes shot around Hanthana and Kandy. The 13 km trek is considered easy, with an elevation gain of 458 meters and a loss of 410 meters. After completing the hike, you’ll be driven to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay, with breakfast included the next morning.
Day 2 – Pekoe Trail Stage 2: Galaha to Loolecondera
After breakfast, you’ll drive to the starting point of Stage 2 of the Pekoe Trail and begin your trek from Galaha to Loolecondera. The walk is divided into two segments: first from Galaha to Deltota, and then from Deltota to Loolecondera. The initial part follows a scenic path through the Deltota Estate, with sweeping views of the Hanthana mountains. Along the way, you’ll pass by the original cottage of James Taylor—the pioneer of Sri Lanka’s tea industry—which marks an important milestone on the trail. The route continues through lush tea bushes, massive rock formations, and a dense high-elevation rainforest. The trek is gentle and picturesque, offering a peaceful and immersive experience in the birthplace of Ceylon Tea. Once you reach Loolecondera, you’ll be driven back to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay, with breakfast provided the following morning.
Day 3 – Pekoe Trail Stage 3: Loolecondera to Tawalantenne
After breakfast, you’ll drive to Loolecondera to begin Stage 3 of the Pekoe Trail with a scenic 18 km trek to Tawalantenne. The trail starts with a gentle uphill climb through the upper divisions of the estate, offering breathtaking views of pine forests and dramatic rock formations. As you ascend, the landscape grows more remote and wild, creating a sense of stepping into another world. Leaving behind the last tea fields, you enter the jungle and soon find yourself on the historic Dimbula Road—an old British-built trail once used for transporting tea by horse and cart. Crossing the pass, you’ll be greeted by sweeping views over the Kotmale and Rilagala mountain ranges, and on clear days, you may even glimpse the sacred Adam’s Peak on the horizon. Continuing through the valleys, you’ll eventually see the Ramboda Pass and its cascading waterfalls before reaching Tawalantenne. After completing the trek, you’ll be driven to Nuwara Eliya for an overnight stay at Galway Heights Hotel, with dinner and breakfast included.
Day 4 – Horton Plains, World’s End & Devil’s Staircase
After an early breakfast, you’ll drive about 1.5 hours to Horton Plains National Park to begin a 3-hour trek through its stunning landscape, including visits to Baker’s Falls and the famous World’s End viewpoint. After returning to the park entrance, a short 15-minute transfer brings you to the top section of the Devil’s Staircase—part of the Pekoe Trail—where you’ll continue your hike through scenic tea plantations with sweeping panoramic views. The descent along this dramatic trail offers some of the most breathtaking scenery of the hill country. You’ll then climb gently up to a remote mountain village, where you’ll spend the night in a peaceful lodge. A hearty, home-cooked Sri Lankan rice and curry dinner awaits you, offering an authentic and cozy end to the day.
Day 5 – Pekoe Trail Stage 12: Ohiya to Thangamale Sanctuary via Haputale
After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll begin a stunning 6-hour trek through the forests and highlands of the Pekoe Trail Stage 12, from Ohiya to Thangamale Sanctuary via Haputale. This walk takes you through a variety of forest types—pine, eucalyptus, natural rainforest—and picturesque tea plantations, offering some of the most therapeutic and breathtaking scenery in Sri Lanka. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views stretching across both the north and south of the island. A unique part of the experience includes walking along a railway line for about half an hour, passing through a tunnel and by a charming hill country station. You’ll stop for a picnic with a view before continuing through the tranquil Thangamale Bird Sanctuary, an ideal spot for birdwatchers and nature lovers. After this unforgettable forest journey, you’ll arrive at a guesthouse in Haputale for a peaceful overnight stay, where a delicious homemade dinner will be served.
Day 6 – Pekoe Trail Stages 13 & 14: Trekking Through Sri Lanka’s Most Beautiful Tea Plantations and Sri Lankan Cooking Experience
After breakfast at the guest house, we begin a memorable trek through what is considered one of the most beautiful tea plantations in Sri Lanka, covering Pekoe Trail Stages 13 and 14. This 5 to 6-hour walk offers sweeping landscapes, stunning views, and a true immersion into the high tea country. Along the way, you’ll witness the timeless rhythm of local tea pluckers at work—rain or shine—and even have the chance to join them in picking tea leaves yourself. The walk also includes a scenic picnic stop amidst the tea fields, far from the tourist crowds, offering a deeply authentic experience. After the trek, a tuk-tuk will take you to Monisha Villa Home Stay, where you’ll take part in a traditional Sri Lankan cooking class with Fathima, a locally renowned cook known for her classes on TripAdvisor with the Sri Lanka Trekking Club. You’ll help prepare the full meal from scratch, and in the evening, enjoy the delicious dinner you’ve made yourself.
Day 7 – Pekoe Trail Stage 15: Trekking to Ella Rock, Ravana Cave, and Village Experience
After a hearty local breakfast at Monisha Villa, we take a tuk-tuk to the starting point of today’s trek—Ella Rock, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic hiking destinations. Ella, nestled in the hill country, offers breathtaking views of lush green valleys and is a perfect base for exploring the region. While most tourists hike to Ella Rock along the same out-and-back trail, we take a unique circular route through quiet forests, local villages, and vegetable gardens, making the journey more immersive and scenic. The trek is about 8 km and takes roughly 4 hours round-trip, with a total elevation gain of 1,000 meters. At the summit of Ella Rock, you’ll enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch while soaking in the stunning views. After a restful break, we descend the mountain and visit the nearby Ravana Temple. From there, we walk to Ella town, where you can head to your hotel, guest house, or homestay of choice to conclude your adventure.

The trail leads you through the picturesque Deltota Tea Estate, winding past serene hill-country villages and a tranquil Hindu temple tucked amid the tea-covered slopes. As you ascend, the landscape shifts from terraced plantations to mist-shrouded forest paths, immersing you in the calm beauty of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Today’s highlight is a visit to the historic Loolkandura Estate, home to the island’s very first tea plantation, established in 1867 by Sir James Taylor. While here, take the time to hike up the nearby Kondagala Rock—a short but rewarding climb that offers commanding views over the estate and beyond. At the summit lies Taylor’s Seat, a simple stone bench where Sir James himself would sit and gaze over the rolling hills he helped transform into the heart of the Ceylon tea industry. From this peaceful perch, you’ll enjoy sweeping panoramas of lush valleys, endless tea fields, and distant misty peaks. As you descend back into the estate, the trail unfolds through a blend of rainforest, rock formations, and tea country vistas, creating a memorable finish to this historically rich and visually stunning section of the Pekoe Trail. Overnight: Colonial bungalow or guesthouse in Deltota.
Day 4 – Pekoe Trail Stage 3: Loolkandura to Tawalantenna (Trekking Day 4)
Begin your hike early at the historic Loolkandura Estate—Sri Lanka’s very first tea plantation. This stage is one of the longest and most rewarding sections of the Pekoe Trail, taking you deep into the heart of the central highlands. The path traces the old Dimbula Road, a colonial-era route once used by British planters to transport tea by bullock cart. As you ascend along this historic trail, the scenery shifts into remote and untamed beauty. Towering grasses sway in the breeze, dense forests draped in mist surround you, and breathtaking viewpoints open up across valleys and distant hills. This is one of the most historically and visually significant stretches of the entire Pekoe Trail—where time feels suspended and the legacy of Ceylon tea echoes in every step. Your trek concludes near Tawalantenna, where you’ll be transferred to your accommodation for a well-earned rest. Overnight: Comfortable guesthouse in Gampola or the surrounding countryside.
Day 5 – Train Journey: Gampola to Hatton – Tea Country by Rail
Take a break from hiking and board the train from Gampola to Hatton, considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Day 7 – Pekoe Trail Stage 7: Kotagala to Norwood (Trekking Day 6)
Today’s 16 km hike begins at Kotagala, ascending toward Chrysler’s Farm Tea Factory. From the high ridges, enjoy breathtaking views of Hatton and Castlereagh Reservoir. Overnight: Stay in Norwood or return to Kotagala guesthouse.
Day 8 – Pekoe Trail: Norwood to Bogawantalawa (Trekking Day 7)
Your trek continues into the famous Golden Valley of Tea, descending from a ridge that separates the Bogawantalawa and Maskeliya Valleys. The area is celebrated for its lush, scenic tea estates and breathtaking views of Adam’s Peak in the distance. As you make your way through the valleys, you’ll pass churches, temples, and picturesque village roads before arriving in Bogawantalawa. Overnight: Guesthouse in Hatton or nearby.
Day 9 – Train Journey: Hatton to Ohiya – Highlands Adventure
Rejoin the highland railway for a scenic ride from Hatton to Ohiya, passing through cloud forests and the borders of Horton Plains National Park. The train journey offers uninterrupted views of misty mountains, waterfalls, and deep valleys. Upon arrival in Ohiya, you’ll transfer to your nearby lodge to prepare for the final stretch of the Pekoe Trail. Overnight: Lodge in Ohiya.
Day 10 – Horton Plains & Pekoe Trail Stage 12: Ohiya to Haputale (Trekking Day 8)

This circuit through the park takes approximately three hours and is an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photographers alike. After completing your loop in Horton Plains, you’ll embark on Stage 12 of the Pekoe Trail, beginning from Udaveriya. This stretch descends gently through the peaceful Thangamale Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers where colorful endemic species flit among towering trees. You’ll then pass-through dense stands of eucalyptus and pine forests, immersing yourself in the fresh, fragrant air of Sri Lanka’s highlands. One of the unique highlights of this stage is a short walk along an old railway track, including a mysterious tunnel carved through the hillside, adding an adventurous touch to your journey. The day concludes as you arrive in the charming town of Haputale, where you will settle into your cozy guesthouse or bungalow and reflect on the beauty of the highland wilderness you’ve just explored.
